03 Sep Skaterdater!!! – you need to watch this…

I can’t believe this film was made in 1965 and played at Cannes in ’67!  This is extremely rad.  The narrative is really cool as well for way back then.  I am a big fan of stories told without dialogue and this is one of them.  Super simple.  I laughed a lot.  Here is an excerpt about the film.  HELP IT GET INTO THE NATIONAL FILM REGISTRY BY VOTING ON THE SITE!  LINK HERE

“Skaterdater is a beautifully crafted short film created in 1965, showcasing not only the new and exciting sport of skateboarding in its early development, but even more, artistically revealing the challenges of peer pressure, adolescence and young love, all without the use of dialogue. The film was shot in the South Bay Area of Los Angeles with skateboard legends such as Gregg Carroll and uses an instrumental surf sound track adding to its youthful and energetic tone. The film made a huge impact internationally in the film industry, winning first place awards in Moscow and Venice, as well as the prestigious Palmes d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. As well, Skaterdater was nominated for an Oscar for Best Live Action Short and received positive reviews from multiple media sources, including TIME Magazine, Newsweek and The New York Times. Skaterdater is ultimately a wholesome, coming-of-age story that not only provided children of the time with an entertaining and positive moral message, but it is also regarded as one of the first live-action skate films ever made. Because of its overall cultural importance and significance, it is our goal to preserve Skaterdater forever by nominating it into the national film registry.”
